It’s National Blood Donor Month! Be A Hero!

January is National Blood Donor Month!

Be a hero in honor of National Blood Donor Month. From cancer patients to car accident victims, every two seconds someone is in need of a blood donation. Unfortunately, winter is a difficult time to get donors and supply gets low. Make a difference in someone’s life and donate today. Your donation can save up to three lives!

Eligibility.

Before you can donate blood, you must be eligible. These restrictions exist to keep both donors and donation recipients safe and healthy.

  • You must me at least 17 years old (some states will allow for 16 year olds to donate). If you are under 18 you will need parent permission.
  • You must weigh more than 110lbs.
  • You must be healthy. Winter is also the height of flu season. If you feel ill, wait until you’re better before you donate.

Depending on your recent habits, there may be a few more specified eligibility requirements that apply to you. If you’ve gotten a tattoo or piercing or have traveled out of the U.S. lately, double check the requirements.

Preparations.

Now that you’ve checked the eligibility requirements and are eligible to donate, there are a few things you should do before you give blood.

  • Drink lots of water.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
  • Eat iron rich foods like spinach or broccoli the day before you donate. You need high iron levels to be eligible.
  • Bring your I.D. and any medications you may be taking.

Donation.

The donation process is easy! You’ll check in and then be given a mini-physical just to make sure you’re healthy. Then, a phlebotomist will draw your blood. Sterile equipment is always used and the process only lasts about 15 minutes. After, you’ll refuel with plenty of refreshments.
